THE BEGINNING OF A MUSICAL JOURNEY

It was a great honor to rehearse every Sunday with this band and perform seasonal concerts in halls such as “El Metropolitano” and “El Teatro de la Universidad de Medellin.” A few months after being accepted to this symphonic band, she had the privilege to travel around Europe performing with them. The Youth Symphonic Band of Medellin was a guest at the WMC Kerkrade competition in Netherlands; they also performed in Germany, Belgium, Tarragona (Spain) and in “L’Auditori” in Barcelona.

Soon after this Tour Laura moved unexpectedly to the United States of America and this sudden change of plans brought new horizons. Up till now Laura studied classically with no knowledge of jazz. However, once she got to the United States, Jazz had captured her heart. At 16 she had her first flirtations with improvising and understanding the jazz language with the Bunker Hill Community College jazz ensemble, The College she attended to for 2 years, to complete her liberal arts requirements.

In 2016 at the age of 18, she began her studies of Jazz composition and Contemporary Writing and Production at Berklee College of music. Since then, she has played clarinet at the Boston Symphony Hall with the Berklee Symphonic Orchestra, as a soloist in “Lord of the Rings” (April 19, 2017), as well as at the Berklee performance center with “Berklee symphonic winds” (December 13, 2017). Laura has also recorded extensively with many students at Berklee from small ensemble recording sessions, to film scoring sessions, in addition to working on her own projects and recital. Laura is currently working on her latest project “Sonidos Music” a clarinet and bass duet, look for weekly videos on her youtube channel.

Laura was born in the city of Medellin, Colombia. At a young age she began playing the snare, but when she turned 11 she switched to her always beloved instrument, the clarinet.

She began taking weekly private lessons but soon found out about the program “La Red de Escuelas de Musica de Medellin.” A program created by the government to help children and youngsters develop their artistic self-being. When she began her process in this music program, which consisted of weekly instrument lessons, wind ensemble/ chorus performances, and some music theory classes, her life completely transformed. She quickly joined the Children’s Orchestra of Medellin, as well as the wind ensemble that was located in her neighborhood.

It had always been her dream to be part of the Youth Symphonic band of Medellin, and at 14 she decided to audition. A few days after much anticipation she got an answer back: she was accepted.
